Playing it by ear

Here be tree-hugging, bird-watching, fandom, art, creation, very bad puns, German, bike-riding stories and thoughts, Pennsylvania life, pining for Michigan, travel photos, and links to other stuff.

Eventually. Just getting started here.

I hope you enjoy it.
So I went to this Insect Fair last weekend, mostly so I could eat some mealworms and crickets, but I ended up talking to this guy at a table about insect galls and decided that on my bike ride with the new road bike (who has been christened Hermes, by the way) I’d collect some oak galls (pictured) and make ferrogallic ink.
I’ve got 11 galls now (you could even say …. I have a lot of gall) and hope to mix up a batch sometime soon!  I’ll probably make a couple of varieties and see how they all turn out!
And once that’s done, I might see about cutting my own quills, as I would rather not sacrifice my metal nibs.
